Conservation officer vs environmental officer: a decision aid

The two titles are sometimes confused. Environmental officer is broader: it covers pollution, environmental health (EHO), EA regulatory officer roles and corporate environmental management. Conservation officer is narrower: nature, heritage and planning conservation.

Remit differences

Conservation officer: nature (habitats, species, sites), heritage (listed buildings, conservation areas), planning conservation (S69-S72 duties). Environmental officer: pollution prevention and control, environmental health, EA regulatory (Permitting, Waste, Water Resources), corporate environmental management.

Typical employers

Salary band comparison

Conservation officer £22,000-£45,000 across the ladder. Environmental officer £24,000-£55,000 across the ladder (the upper end is wider because of corporate environmental management posts which can pay well above £55,000 at senior levels).

Vacancy volume in 2026/27

Both cohorts have positive net vacancy growth. Environmental officer total vacancy volume is roughly 2-3x the conservation officer cohort because of EHO regulatory recruitment volume.

Graduate entry

Environmental officer graduate entry is more often via formal grad schemes (large consultancies, large corporates, EA) than conservation officer entry, which still relies more heavily on voluntary survey experience.
