RSPB vs National Trust: conservation pay and structure
Two of the largest UK NGO conservation employers, with overlapping headline pay but different cohort structures.
Pay at adjacent grades
RSPB Band 5 Assistant CO and NT Ranger are broadly equivalent in seniority; NT pays £1,500-£1,500 more at the top of the entry band. RSPB Band 3 Senior CO pays a wider top range than NT Area Ranger but the role profile is different (RSPB Senior CO is more advisory/casework; NT Area Ranger is more operational/management).
Pension
NT's 10 percent DC match is the highest in the NGO cohort. RSPB at 8 percent is the next strongest. On a £30,000 post, NT pension is worth about £300/year more than RSPB on a like-for-like contribution.
FTC and seasonal
RSPB about 50 percent FTC in advertised conservation posts; NT about 35 percent FTC plus a heavy seasonal cohort (March-October) of front-line roles. For a permanent-post seeker, NT offers a slightly better stability profile at headline; for a project-focused specialist, RSPB offers more named FTC opportunities.
Long-term bet
Both offer 20-30 year career arcs ending at Reserves/Estate Manager or higher. RSPB has more advancement specifically in nature conservation; NT has more advancement that crosses into estate, visitor and built-heritage management.
