Civil Service EO pay for conservation roles (Defra ALBs)
EO (Executive Officer) is the common entry grade for direct-entry conservation specialists in Defra arms-length bodies. The Defra ALB framework pays slightly below core Defra at the same grade.
EO conservation role mix
Typical EO conservation titles: Adviser, Officer (e.g. Species Officer, Habitats Officer), Field Officer. EO is the workhorse grade for delivery, advisory and casework; policy-only roles tend to start at HEO.
EO to HEO progression
Typical EO to HEO timescale in a Defra ALB is 2-4 years for someone with a relevant MSc, slightly longer (3-5 years) for someone entering from a BSc or sector-equivalent experience. Competition for HEO posts is structurally tighter because the grade carries delegated decision-making authority.
Alpha pension at EO
The alpha scheme accrues 2.32 percent of pensionable earnings per year as a CARE pension, with a default revaluation in line with CPI for active members. On a £30,000 EO post, employer cost is about £8,690/year - the largest single non-cash component of total reward.
