Conservation officer salary in Scotland
Scotland has its own joint-council pay spine (SJC), distinct income-tax bands (six-band Scottish income tax 2026/27), and a different employer mix dominated by NatureScot, the Scottish Wildlife Trust, and the National Trust for Scotland.
NatureScot pay framework
NatureScot (formerly Scottish Natural Heritage) is the public-sector adviser on Scotland's natural environment, with about 700 staff. It uses Scottish Government main pay scales (AO-EO-HEO-SEO-G7-G6), distinct from the UK Civil Service Defra ALB framework. EO-equivalent conservation roles paid £28,000-£32,000 in 2026.
SJC (Scottish Joint Council) spine
Scottish local authority conservation officers are paid on the SJC spine, which is separately negotiated from the NJC. SJC settles slightly above NJC at lower grades (SCP equivalent of NJC SCP 23 paid c.£30,300 in 2025/26).
Scottish income tax effect on take-home
The six-band Scottish income tax (starter 19 percent, basic 20 percent, intermediate 21 percent, higher 42 percent above £43,662, advanced 45 percent above £75,000, top 48 percent above £125,140) means a Scottish CO on £40,000 pays about £600 more income tax than an English counterpart, before adjustments. The reckoner models this directly.
