Principal ecologist: technical authority and pay
A Principal Ecologist is the senior technical authority for a practice: EIA chapter lead, expert witness, internal QA gatekeeper, and (often) team or service-line lead. CEcol or CEnv is effectively expected; MCIEEM with 8-10+ years' relevant experience is the minimum.
Day-to-day duties
- EIA chapter lead for major (DCO, NSIP) and large planning applications.
- Expert witness work at planning inquiry, examination-in-public and (occasionally) High Court.
- Technical authority and QA sign-off across a portfolio.
- Service-line strategy and BD leadership; chartered-application sponsorship for staff.
BD and utilisation interaction
Principal pay scales meaningfully with billable utilisation (target typically 65-75 percent) and a BD target (usually £150k-£400k won-work/year). Bonuses can lift OTE by 10-25 percent in larger practices.
Principal vs Defra SEO
A consultancy Principal on £55,000 with a £4,500 employer pension contribution totals £59,500 cash-equivalent. A Defra core Grade 7 on £58,000 with alpha employer pension cost of £16,800 totals £74,800 cash-equivalent. The Civil Service Grade 7 cash-equivalent is materially ahead at this grade because of pension valuation.
