Senior ecologist: role, pay and chartered status
A Senior Ecologist in consultancy carries project management, technical sign-off and (often) BD responsibility. MCIEEM is the expected credential; CEnv or CEcol increasingly the indicator that opens the next step to Principal.

Day-to-day duties
- Project management of EIA chapters and PEAs (UKHab classification, BS 42020 reporting).
- Technical sign-off of protected-species survey reports.
- Mentoring Assistant and graduate ecologists; portfolio review for ACIEEM/MCIEEM applicants.
- Client liaison and (often) BD support for the practice.
Consultancy band variation
Top-tier consultancies (WSP, AECOM, Ramboll, Arcadis, Atkins, Stantec) pay £43,000-£52,000 for a Senior Ecologist; mid-tier (Tyler Grange, Avian Ecology, Wardell Armstrong) £40,000-£47,000; boutique consultancies £36,000-£44,000 with shorter routes to Principal.

Senior to Principal typically takes 3-5 years and usually requires CEcol or CEnv plus demonstrated billable utilisation and BD contribution.
