Ecologist salary in the UK (consultancy and public)

Ecologist is the standard private-sector consultancy title for a working ecological specialist. The public-sector counterpart is usually 'Conservation Officer' or 'Adviser'. Pay ranges differ; consultancy is wider top-and-bottom.

Ecologist vs conservation officer

The functional core overlaps (species ID, habitat assessment, casework). The employer mix differs: ecologist is consultancy-led, conservation officer is NGO/CS/LPA-led. The credential ladder differs: ecologist progresses via CIEEM grades (GradCIEEM, ACIEEM, MCIEEM, CEcol); conservation officer often progresses via internal employer grade (NJC SCP, NT band, RSPB band).

Why consultancy bands are wider

Consultancy pay flexes with billable utilisation, BD performance and licence-holder scarcity (bat licences, GCN, dormouse and badger licences materially affect earning capacity). A boutique consultancy may pay 10-15 percent below a top-tier (e.g. WSP, AECOM, Ramboll, Atkins) at the same CIEEM grade.

BNG-driven demand

The Environment Act 2021 mandatory Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) regime, in force since 2 April 2024 for major and 1 April 2025 for minor planning applications, has materially increased consultancy demand for BNG-assessment-capable ecologists. The 2024 CIEEM survey identifies BNG specifically as the largest single demand driver for the 2024-2026 hiring cycle.
